Spearing (also called Atlantic silversides) are small, slim, shiny baitfish commonly used by anglers. They have a slender, translucent silver body with a bright silver stripe along the side and are usually about 4–6 inches long. Spearing are abundant in bays, estuaries, and nearshore waters, and are popular as live or frozen bait because their flash and size attract fish like fluke, striped bass, snapper blues, and bluefish.
