Clams are a popular natural bait for saltwater fishing because of their strong scent and natural appeal to bottom‑feeding fish. Often used whole or cut into strips, clam bait is especially effective for species such as striped bass, flounder, blackfish (tautog), sea bass, croaker, and surf perch. Clams work well for surf, pier, and bottom fishing when fresh or properly salted.
