Fishing report for 08/06/26

Things are finally starting to change a little bit so its time for a new report! For weeks we were stuck in the same routine and now we have broken that trend a little.

Back bay is heating up a bit with action especially with tog season opening up on the 1st. We will start with that, hearing a lot of tog action right off the bat. Rock piles, bridges and piers are producing fish but mostly shorts. Bigger fish are on the wrecks and reefs mainly on green crab, shrimp or sand fleas. Fluke has been quite good in the bay. Lots of shorts on gulp, minnows and mackerel. Bigger fish have been hitting more mackerel and bigger gulp. Heard multiple fluke in the 26-30 inch range. Croaker are still invading the bay on smaller hook rigs and just about any bait. Sheepshead and triggers are still around the bridges and piers as well. Sandfleas and crabs for the sheepshead and squid mainly for the trigger. Sandsharks are still loaded in the bays and inlets on any bait you throw. White perch are heavy in the river in deeper holes on bloods and fishbites. 

Out front has been a little tricky. With beach replenishments happening at the north end of OC and off Strathmere water has been filthy. Best to fish mid island in the 20's to 40's. Kingfish, spot and croaker are still the main targets, fishbites and bloods have been working. Brown sharks have been plentiful as well as a few sandtigers. Be careful, know the rules and PAY ATTENTION. Mackerel is the good starter bait, catch a spot, kingfish or croaker and use them for bait. Actually been hearing a good number of spike weakfish as well. Wrecks and reefs have been pretty good, fish are just moving a lot. Bigger fluke have been deeper in the 100 plus foot range. Trigger are all over the wrecks and reefs with decent tog action as well. Started getting reports of some cobia and Mahi action around the pots. Bluefin and yellowfin have been heavy in the north and south canyons, troll anything that looks like squid and you should catch. Just started getting reports on ballyhoo bites as well. 

Matt Sullivan had a heck of a day at " one of the southern canyons". While trolling bally he got this beautiful 75lb 77 inch wahoo. Congrats Matt!
